Break Bread

By Joe Templin · November 4, 2026 · 1 min read

Sharing food with another human being is an intimate act that should not be indulged in lightly.

— M F K Fisher

Breaking bread with another person is one of the oldest ways of bonding and establishing covenants.

If someone has shared my table, they are accorded a special level of respect and trust. Violate that trust and you are dead to me, the vilest form of betrayer and destined for the lowest circle per Dante. But honor that shared experience, that vulnerable and valuable time in my home or elsewhere and our relationship will deepen and strengthen.

My better clients get birthday lunches (the best time to get Introductions as it were), and my favorite ones meet me for a beer or ice cream and random, relaxed conversation that yields immeasurable results for my business and my soul. The act of eating together in friendship, talking and investing time to enjoy one another’s company will yield relationships and referrals that you cannot rush nor replicate.
